Breadbox Farm Rabbit Rescue

We believe that as breeders, it is our responsibility to use our vast rabbit knowledge to also help the rabbits in need in our community. We know that every living creature deserves compassion and gentle care. It is our mission to find these rabbits their place in the world, spread awareness about proper rabbit care, and to help others make good decisions for the rabbits in their lives.

The following rabbits are looking for a loving family. They have either been dropped off directly to us, rescued by one of our local shelters, or have been raised at a rabbitry but have special needs. They will need attentive care and patience as they grow to trust you and learn to love again.

Each rabbit is carefully monitored for health concerns and aggressive behaviors before being offered for adoption, but we cannot guarantee the temperaments of these rabbits like we can our own. We believe that there is a family out there for every rabbit, regardless of their hard past, different ability levels, or trust issues.

When you are ready to adopt a pet, please fill out an Adoption Application Form and Robin or Lisa will contact you if approved to set up an appointment time. To reserve a rabbit you will be required to pay in full through an electronic form of payment.

PICK UP and TRANSPORT OPTIONS

LOCAL PICK UP is available once you are approved for adoption. We have many clients who drive in from the surrounding states. In many instances you may take home your bunny the day you meet them (check for a “ready to go home” date on bunnies under 8 weeks old.)

PRIVATE TRANSPORT and DELIVERY is available through third party transporters. A quick google search will bring up many options. You will be responsible for choosing a transporter you trust and securing your own transportation. We are happy to arrange pick up times with them. We trust Mabel with LC Animal Transport, her number is 347-819-4372. You can reach out to her for timing and transport rates.

DOMESTIC AIRLINE TRANSPORT is also possible through American PetEmbark. You can expect to pay approximately $550-750 total depending on how far the pet is going and miscellaneous fees associated with your pet flying, such as a proper crate for the flight ($60-80) and a required health certificate ($70-90) within 10 days of departure. We have sent many rabbits as far as California and Washington and feel strongly that American Airlines is a safe and trustworthy option for receiving your new pet.

SPECIAL CARE NEEDS

Travis and Wesley | Bonded Pair of Male Netherland Dwarfs

Suggested Donation $200

  • Breed: Netherland Dwarfs

    Sex: Both Neutered Males

    Age: 3 yrs

    Full Grown

    Color: Black Otter and Chestnut

  • These boys are the ideal therapy bunnies and as sweet as can be. Almost doll-like, as Travis will completely melt in your hands. Wesley is the big brother and caretaker and is always there when Travis he needs grooming support. They spend much of the day playing and then relaxing together. You will not find a sweeter friendship. They must stay together.

The bad news is that Travis does need help, because he has malocclusion and his teeth must be trimmed every 3-4 weeks! Our hope is that we can find a family that will take on their case and can afford to have his incisors removed. The quote for this is quite expensive at around $500. The good news is that after surgery, he shouldn’t need any special care as rabbits can chew hay and pellets with their back molars.

this cannot be achieved, we would need to find someone who can learn to trim Travis’ teeth, or bring him here once a month for a free teeth trimming service until the teeth can be removed.

It may seem like a lot of care, and it’s true that it is more than a healthy rabbit would need, but these boys are truly angels. I just know someone out there will appreciate their zen demeanor and special friendship, bad teeth or not.

  • These boys are already fixed, but Travis needs an expensive surgery to remove his front teeth. We were quoted $500 through Willow Oak Veterinary.

Brandi | Ruby Eyed White | Mixed Breed Doe

Suggested Donation $200 for bonded pair

  • Breed: Mixed

    Sex: female (not spayed)

    Age: 3 yrs

Full Grown Size: Size of a house cat

  • Brandi is a sweet ruby eyed white bunny. She loves attention! When you go to feed her, she comes right up to you and smells your hand and can’t wait to eat.

Her previous owner said she loves exploring new things and is very curious about new toys.

She is very protective of her bonded friend Harlow and can get a little feisty if she is stressed like a typical female. Haha! Brandi and Harlow need to stay together as a pair. So if you are interested in one, you need to love both.

  • The girls are not fixed so consider the cost of a Spay if you choose to home them with other rabbits.

Harlow | Self Black | Mixed Breed Doe

Suggested Donation $200 for bonded pair

  • Breed: Mixed

    Sex: female (not spayed)

    Age: 4 yrs

Full Grown Size: Size of a house cat

  • Harlow is a sweet self black rabbit. She loves when you come to feed her. If you put your hand up to her gently, she will smell your hand and wait to be fed.

Her previous owner said Harlow can be a little anxious and might get scared easily with sudden movements or around people who are unfamiliar to her. If she is around Brandi she is more comfortable and has a lot more energy.

Harlow and Brandi will stay together as a bonded pair. If you like one, then please fall in love with both.

  • The girls are not fixed so consider the cost of a Spay if you choose to home them with other rabbits.

Lilac | Mixed Breed

Suggested Donation $150

  • Breed: Mixed Breed

    Sex: female (not spayed)

    Age: unknown (over 1 1/2 years )

Full Grown Size: Smaller than a housecat

  • Lilac is a beautiful black mixed breed rabbit that is a little smaller than a housecat. She is very outgoing and her foster home describes her as being similar to a dog. She loves to lick people and especially prefers men.

Lilac is highly intelligent. She needs space to run around and loves toys for enrichment. She gets a little scared when being picked up, but does like being held once she is in your arms.

  • Lilac is not fixed so consider the cost of a Spay if you choose to home her with other rabbits.

Winter | Himalayan

Suggested Donation $100

  • Breed: Himalayan

    Sex: male (not neutered)

    Age: Under 3 years

Full Grown Size:Smaller than a house cat

  • Winter came to us emaciated and dirty coming from an unsafe situation. He was so dirty we couldn’t even tell he was white. Surprisingly, he was still friendly and will come right up to you for food and pets once you have won his trust.

After a couple months at Breadbox, he has transformed! He is now a healthy weight with a white coat and shading on his ears and feet. Winter has ruby colored eyes and is a little smaller than a house cat.

We have learned that he is confident and determined, and quite the escape artist. But he is loyal to a fault! He won’t ever leave you. Once he escapes his pen, he happily hops through our gardens munching away the lambs ear plants.

Winter would do really well as a garden pet as he is most comfortable outside and would love to have space to run around.

  • Winter is not fixed so consider the cost of a neuter if you choose to home him with other rabbits.

They come to the front of the cage when you open the door to see what is happening. They are friendly bunnies and like sitting in your lap. They don’t necessarily like to be carried around. The babies love interacting with people and getting our attention.

  • Chestnut baby is not fixed so consider the cost of a neuter if you choose to home him with other rabbits in the future.

Ways to Help our Breadbox Rescue Program

  1. Share. Spread the word about our available rabbits on social media. This helps more than you think!

  2. Donate your time. We are always happy to include new volunteers in cleaning cages, socializing shy rabbits, and feeding and watering the herd. Email us if you’d like to donate your time.

  3. Build. More cages and rabbit runs mean we can save more rabbits in a healthy, clean, and enriching environment! We currently need individuals willing to donate their time and carpentry skills building hutches and runs. (Cost of all supplies will be covered.)

  4. Donate. The Breadbox Rescue Program is sustained on donations, community support, and A LOT of hard work and emotional moments behind the scenes. We try to keep a reserve of $400-600 at all times in our rescue fund for possible emergency health care costs. And we are currently saving to build 6 more hutches with a large attached play yard. 100% of your financial donation goes directly to providing for rescue rabbits. Our breeding rabbitry and all business related to it is a separate entity.
